Sabrina has been on acid reflux medicine (first Zantac, then Prevacid) since she was around 3 or 4 weeks old. Once we got the go-ahead from her GI doc to wean her off, I did some research about the importance of weaning slowly (just going cold turkey has some dangerous risks associated with the stomach producing too much acid all at once).
So we've been slowly weaning her off Prevacid for the last 2 and a half months; from 2 milliliters in the morning and 2 at night, to 1.5 ml, to 1 ml, to .5 and, just for good measure .3 ml to nothing. She took her last dose Sunday night and so far so good! Gene was concerned about the long-term effects of having an infant on medication. I just knew it helped soooo much with her discomfort/colic. But she's 6 months older now and as we'd read about, most infants outgrow GERD around this time.
And on the ear infection front, I'm thinking that the azythromicin may have worked because her appetite is back: she's drinking 9 ounces each time (even during the day) and eating all her peas, rice cereal and carrots. She's been doing this consistently for the last week. We'll find out for sure if her ears look clear tomorrow at her pediatrician's appointment. Keep your fingers crossed that we can avoid going with the ear tubes...
Good-bye Prevacid
