VCUG is negative!

I took Sabrina to get her renal ultrasound and VCUG (voiding cystourethrogram) on Friday. Sabrina cried for most of the ultrasound (go figure) and was a real trooper for the more invasive VCUG (where she had to get catheterized and had a contrasting dye injected into her bladder to see if any of it refluxed back towards her kidneys).

I was able to stay with her for both procedures and for the VCUG, Stephanie from the Child Life department was there also. Stephanie was telling me that the department she works in helps children understand what is happening by using more simple language and for toddlers like Sabrina, she's there to help comfort/distract/etc. During the CVUG Stephanie was blowing bubbles in Sabrina's direction and that was a great way to help keep her distracted. She also had these toys that looked like little aquariums that light up and had fish swimming around. Perfect!

I was so relieved when the doctor said that the test was negative -- phiew! Sabrina was back to her usual happy self within a minute of me being able to pick her up.

Once the catheter was removed, we needed to wait for her to pee out most of the contrasting dye. To help her do that, a nurse was slowly pouring some warm water over her diaper area, while the doctor, Stephanie, the nurse and I were all saying "Pee pee!! Pee pee!!" :) It have sounded funny to anyone passing within an ear shot...
