First vaccination

After doing a good bit of reading on vaccines, I decided to follow Dr. Sears' "alternative vaccine schedule". It basically results in a fully vaccinated child, but it spaces out the vaccines, limits them to no more than 2 at a time (so if there's a negative reaction you can more easily determine the cause), and it suggests that the most common and most dangerous diseases are vaccinated against first.


So for her 2-month appointment I wanted to get her started on this schedule. Her regular pediatrician's office didn't have any "well appointments" until mid-October when Sabrina would have been 10 weeks old. Too late in my opinion, so I did some checking around for another pediatrician. I find one that is accepting new patients and accepts our insurance plan so I make an appointment for Sabrina's 2-month birthday. Gene comes along (thanks to a recommendation by one of Gene's colleagues) and off we go. The 2 vaccines she was due to get were Rotavirus and DTAP. After going through all the stupid paperwork, we see the doctor, show him the schedule and he agrees to let us follow it. Except, he says "We don't carry the rotavirus vaccine because it's too new and I'd like to see more studies being done first". I look at him, puzzled because I know this vaccine is on the American Academy of Pediatrician's approved vaccination schedule, and it's also on the CDC schedule. Hmmmmm. So in the end, she only got one vaccine (DTAP), which she didn't really appreciate. As soon as that needle pierced her tender thigh, she screamed out loud. I started sobbing too. Soon it was all over and we were on our way and I knew I would not be returning to that office again.

BUT that left me with a quandary -- I still need to get her vaccination for rotavirus and soon so that I can stay on schedule. I still don't want to have to wait until mid-October so this leaves me with no choice but to take her to a 3rd pediatrician and hope 1. that they would be OK with the alternative schedule and 2. that they carry the rotavirus vaccine.
