Today marks Sabrina's 2-week birthday and we took her for her 2-week check-up at the pediatrician's office. We were hoping for good news in the weight department. At her first visit (at 3 days old), the doctor was concerned that her weight had dropped too far from her weight at birth. That's when we started formula feeding in addition to pumping breastmilk. Well, the good news is that whatever we're doing seems to be working: she now weighs 9 pounds, 12 ounces (up from 9 pounds, 8.9 ounces at birth). We were happy and relieved to hear those numbers!
Everything else checked out fine, too. Her newborn screen came back normal (blood tests to check for various things).
We told the doctor about our concerns with what we think are abdominal/gas pains that cause Sabrina to go from a deep sleep or awake and smiling to hysterical crying in a split second, along with arching her back, flailing her arms, etc. Last night was particularly rough - I'd soothe her by picking her up, holding her to my shoulder, letting her fall back asleep, laying her down in her bassinet, then I'd get into bed, only to have it start up 30 seconds later. This went on from 11 pm to 2:30 am. Feeding her a bottle would help temporarily, and frankly I was getting concerned. The doctor said we could use mylicon drops in her formula and for her constipation we could use a tsp of dark karo syrup mixed into her formula. We'll give it a shot and see what happens!
Oh, and the doctor said that at this stage it's OK to take Sabrina out in public places like malls. Ummm.... Gene and I were each thinking the same thing... we've been taking her everywhere since she was 4 days old! Oh well, we're thinking Sabrina has already established her own set of benchmarks!
