Just the 3 Of Us

Get a glimpse into our world as we go from 2 to 3 family members!

It's official - COLIC :(

After a really rough night on Thursday with maybe two 30 minute sleep segments and endless screaming / crying, we decided it was time for a trip to the pediatrician. We had just started Sabrina on the new formula on Thursday and even though it hadn't even been 24 hours since the change, things were getting worse. While I'm fine with changing the formula, I felt like we needed a game plan also. If this formula doesn't work, what's the next step? When/How do we rule out physiological issues? I was able to secure an appointment for Friday afternoon so once Gene got home, off we went.

The doctor said it's definitely colic and we need to give the formula more time - 3 weeks -before we know if it's working. The doc suggested we try some things to help calm her, most of which we've either tried or aren't conducive to US getting sleep at the same time (like putting her in her car seat and taking her for a drive). She said that colic usually resolves itself ("a switch goes off") by about 3 months of age. WHAT??? 3 months?? Oh boy. I asked why it's only at night that she gets that way (during the day she's like a different person) and she explained that colic is always at night. Oh.

The doctor wants us to bring in a stool sample so they can check it for blood (if it's present, it means she's got a milk protein allergy). She also gave us a referral for an upper GI series test for Sabrina to check for issues in the esophagus and stomach. We'll be going to the local hospital for that test on Tuesday morning. Sabrina will have to drink a barium solution and they'll watch it as it goes through her system. Oh and I need to bring her in with an empty stomach -- she definitely won't be happy :(

But here's the kicker -- last night was her best night EVER! She fell right asleep after her 9pm feeding, didn't wake up when I put her in her basinett, didn't cry/scream the entire night and only wimpered when she was hungry (every 2 hours). It was so drastically different from the previous night, I kept wondering if something was wrong!! I don't want to jinx anything, but I sure hope the infamous "switch" that the doctor referenced has been flipped. We'll see how tonight goes.

Today Sabrina and I ran our Saturday errands while Gene got some office work done at home. We went to the post office, dry cleaners, Caribou coffee (hot chocolate for me), and Costco. She slept the entire time, oblivious to what was going on :) Once we got home, she wimpered to let us know it was time to eat.
